So long, de minimis - and thanks for all the shoes 🇺🇸
Â
We're super grateful for the 13 years of tariff-free shipments we've been able to send to our US customers. The "de minimis exemption" meant that orders worth less than $800 pretty much sailed US through customs, without extra charges.Â
As you'll probably know, that all changes on August 29th, when US customs begins collecting tariffs on all imports from the EU, even those valued lower than $800.Â
We and our shipping partner (DHL) are waiting to see what US tariff collection looks like in practice, and it means that all shipping has to the US has been temporarily suspended, until everyone figures that out. Â
Our (potentially flawed) understanding of the theory is that our US customers will pay a flat rate €80 USD on any order of shoes, up to the value of €533. And, for orders greater than €533, they'll instead pay 15% of the value (plus a processing fee). Big caveat: there are warnings floating around that the flat rate could be higher than €80 USD (as high as €200 USD) if USPS are unhappy with the shipment's paperwork (or if they just feel like it). But let's hope they do everything above board (if any of this can be said to be above board).
The $80 flat rate will be in effect for 6 months, after which it will be a simple 15% (plus processing fee) on any order. So our US friends will end up paying about the same as our EU friends, who pay between 19% and 27% VAT.Â
AND (we're excited about this) it means that our US customers can pay LESS than the Europeans if they order 2 or more pairs, for the next 6 months (that'll show those garlic-chomping, clog-hopping Euros).Â
The last detail to be figured out is whether US customers pay those charges up front, to us, when they order shoes, or pay them to US Customs directly. Once we know, shipping can resume. Â
Thanks in advance for your understanding and patience as we navigate this new era. We're happy to chat with anyone from the US thinking of ordering and we're grateful to hear everyone's experiences.Â
We've already been through this once with Brexit, and we still have UK customers. So we're hopeful.Â
It's all gonna be ok. Right? Right.🤞
We'll post the latest on this topic in our FAQs.Â
